If you do not expect it, you will not find the unexpected, for it is hard to find and difficult.
HERACLITUS
Do you search regularly for the unexpected?
Where do you go looking for it?
For truly, the unexpected, by definition, can turn out to be anywhere. You might come across it as your brain is relaxing while driving or taking a shower. It might come to you in a tiny clip from a movie or a television show. You might be reading an article online, in a magazine or a book, or watching a video on YouTube, or searching stories inside social media.
The unexpected is precisely that. And if your antennae are properly tuned, it will jump out at you and create that first glimmer of, “what if?“
In that glimmer, while it is still fresh in your mind, do you make it a point to take a note either on your phone or on a piece of paper or similar? Because just as quickly as the glimmer of the unexpected makes itself known, it can just as quickly slide back into the recesses of your mind, and be lost forever.
The hunt for the unexpected is the expectation that nothing is truly 100% for certain. In that simple understanding, we find ourselves that much more ready or willing to allow for variables that we might not have anticipated, such that they could become the proverbial stimuli that accelerate your quest into the unknown.
Have you ever been talking with someone and they say something that you might not have anticipated and then all of a sudden you have that metaphorical lightbulb above your head? Do you politely ask for a second to jot something down before you forget it, or do you just presume you’re going to still remember it in 10 or 15 minutes from that moment in time?
When the unexpected makes its appearance, I believe it is most wise to grab that with the same gusto as if you were searching for your next, Pokémon in the world around you. It is the same dopamine release in your brain when your brain awakens to the prospect that there is something of consequence that you have just encountered, that could be truly valuable for whatever it is that you are seeking or doing in your life.
The unexpected is a non-terrestrial playground that exists solely in the universe of mind. When those opportunities arise, we are well served to embrace them, and celebrate them, with all that we might.
Happy Monday!
