Do you remember that time when…?
How adept are you at being able to share that memory with another person?
If you were to give it your very best explanation, how likely would you be to completely convey the feeling you had when you experienced it directly?
Memories are holographic, and they defy complete shareability for countless reasons.
A memory can easily be triggered by any one of our five senses, instantly calling back thoughts that we may have completely forgotten. An old familiar smell, a song, a taste or visual can instantly transport us to times in our past with instant connections to a forgotten memory.
These triggers are in fact, a portal in time, in which a buried time capsule within us is unlocked and remembered.
What is it about the memory? It is not a visual that is blatantly there. It is not a shareable media. It is a feeling, a sense of experience, a portal to a time gone by.
We may have shared that with one or more people. They too, can be triggered by a stimuli that can send all of you back to a key moment.
Why do you think live recorded music from concert tours is so popular? It transports us to a place in time, when things were different, when we were experiencing something of indelible magnitude.
Have you ever seen Jimmy Page, Pete Townshend or David Gilmore play the guitar live? Or perhaps sat in the presence of the Dalai Lama and listened to the quintessentially calming nature of his voice and presence? These and hundreds of other memories that I treasure could never be communicated with full velocity, even if you were to watch a video that I shot in that moment. It will never convey that experience. I could spend paragraphs relaying each feeling that those experiences evoked, how and why they moved me, etc…. And you will still never have the full sense of living the experience.
Without question, each of us have many such moments. Moments that we will always treasure. Moments that are uniquely ours, and with whom we may share some of those experiences.
I think the secret is to live life to the fullest. Savoring each and every moment to their greatest potential. The experiences you amass will always be yours, and in the end, they are truly the life treasure worth amassing.
Happy Friday!
