A compassionate world begins with you.

I saw the video below on Facebook and it melted me, so I had to share it today.

It is a brief reminder that between the terror and devastation that runs rampant through the world, that we are, deep within, compassionate creatures, capable of bonding with almost anything that is sentient.

If you sort through news stories and the continuous horror show that media loves to parade before us, you are left with a much darker picture of humanity. One that is riddled with strife, anger, disappointment, resentment, revenge, all leading to violence and mayhem.

I choose to forecast a different picture. One of tolerance, acceptance, inclusion, understanding, common ground, empathy and compassion. Spreading these messages through images, words, dialogue and deeds is my only defense against the harsh reality that tries so regularly to populate my consciousness. It affords me the opportunity to see the goodness and value in life, to express the deeper feelings and sentiments that I value most, and to spread those expressions of love to anyone who might listen (and learn).

The arrogance of the human specie enables some of us to feel entitled beyond our place on this planet. We feed off of information that is spread with expectation that if a large body of humanity chooses to acquiesce to such mindset, that it must be so.

Far more important (in my perspective) is the prospect that free thought and independent reasoning and considerations will ultimately determine whether we have a fighting chance for survival. Will humanity find an equilibrium that takes our specie to a more relaxed and placid state of existence, or will we continue to wallow in strife, conflict, greed and envy until collectively we self destruct?

A large portion of the answer to that question falls to today’s aphorism. Compassion.

This is the cornerstone to turning the corner into a more beautiful way of life. Compassion enables humanity to discern positive from negative thoughts and behaviors, and facilitates the ability to put our own selfish needs in a corner so that we might deliver our very best selves to the humans and other living beings around us. Through compassion, we are able to put aside our own perspective, long enough to feel empathy towards whatever it is that we are engaging with. We are able to envision the needs of the third party in ways that a lack of compassion will never enable.

In our compassionate stance, we as warriors, looking out for our own, are able to remain strong through a veil of kindness and tenderness so that we might bolster a world that has so many dark corners  with our own internal luminance. In shining this beam of kindness in physical, mental or emotional expressions, we transfer a portion of our inner soul into another creature, and give a gift of inestimable value.

It just does not get any more simple than that. Dig within and find your compassionate being. Look around you and discover those who are so desperately hoping and praying that someone with compassion will bestow some of that upon them and give generously. In doing so, you will discover, as the people and animals in this video demonstrate, that the more you choose to give, the wealthier you become in the process.

The joy in delivering compassion is incomparable. It warms our souls and illuminates our beings in ways that nothing else on Earth can accomplish. It is truly in a league of its own.

Happy Monday!

When I was 5 years old, I discovered that the lemon tree in the backyard + dixie cups + water and sugar and I was in business. I have been hooked on that ever since. In 1979, I borrowed $14,000 to create a brand new product... photographic greeting cards with no text on the inside, called Paradise Photography. That was the start of The Illusion Factory. Since then, The Illusion Factory has been entrusted by all of the major studios and broadcasters with the advertising and marketing of over $7 billion in filmed, live, broadcast, gaming, AR, VR and regulated gaming forms of entertainment, generating more than $100 Billion in revenue and 265 awards for creativity and technology for our clients. When I took a break from film school at UCLA to move to Hawaii, my mother did not lecture me. Instead, she took 150 of her favorite aphorisms and in her beautiful calligraphy, wrote them artistically throughout a blank journal. That is the origin of the Lessons from the Mountain series. Since then, on my journeys to the top of a mountain to watch the sunrise, I have spent countless hours contemplating words of wisdom from the sages of all races, genders and political persuasions, constantly accumulating the thoughts to guide me on my life path. I hope you enjoy my books. Please let me know your thoughts, as I highly value your feedback!
