Free Speech Can Change Everything In The Blink Of An Eye

free speech

A lot can happen in the blink of an eye. In the blink of an eye, free speech enabled a videotape of four police officers killing an innocent human being to be loaded onto a social media platform and the world changed.

The opportunity for free speech is one of the greatest freedoms that has ever existed since the dawn of time. A human being having the opportunity to express how they honestly feel is something that we take for granted in the United States, but that has rarely been the case in history. Instead, a dominant force trying to retain power will suppress free-speech so that their reign may continue.

But as we have all experienced, freedom of speech is a double edged sword. With that freedom comes tremendous responsibility towards which the majority of participants are lacking sufficient intelligence or discipline to engage.

Instead, the human specie is much more prone to expressing the wide spectrum of perspectives which have a full range of context, implication and desired outcome. In the majority of circumstances with a set of rules that are abided by by all parties, free speech facilitates the sharing of important ideas and ultimately delivers new perspectives… when all parties are respectful and cooperative.

Sadly, with the ingredients of capitalism, that free-speech amplifies into a form of news entertainment (or diversion) which by virtue of the business model that is delivering it, makes what was previously a free concept into a concept that is now serving a financial master… The advertising sponsors of the news source.

I have wrestled with the moral issue of free speech for as long as my brain was able to understand the polarity of the circumstance. I would often ask myself whether I would rather allow a neo Nazi to be saying absolutely despicable, horrible things about me versus the elimination of free speech entirely in favor of some over-arching authority that would get to determine what was allowed to be said and what was not.

With the addition of social media (which has converted the human herd into a digital configuration of the same), the tiniest utterance of a statement could potentially ripple all over the world in milliseconds. The power of this is both impressive and terrifying simultaneously.

Human beings are herd animals and they have herd animal instincts. When society grew large enough that people started leaving their local herd, social groups became the new herd, and then in the next evolution, Social Media replaced the herd with a digital connection.

Now as I watch a platform like Twitter or Facebook deliver consequences that impact elections, people’s individual freedom and other core variables, I am reminded of Star Trek and the Borg which was a collective hive consciousness. Human beings are quickly becoming the Borg through the rapid proliferation of information without filtration.

As we are discovering, the rapid escalation of cool technology like the one you are using to read this, has delivered humanity to the doorstep of a massive abyss. It will require significant calm minds to contemplate the intense ramifications of these new variables in the evolution of humanity and the wisdom necessary to curtail the potential destruction without eliminating the joyous freedom that has been created in the process.

I hope your Thursday proves productive and less impaired by a society spinning out of control than it was in the previous few days❤️

When I was 5 years old, I discovered that the lemon tree in the backyard + dixie cups + water and sugar and I was in business. I have been hooked on that ever since. In 1979, I borrowed $14,000 to create a brand new product... photographic greeting cards with no text on the inside, called Paradise Photography. That was the start of The Illusion Factory. Since then, The Illusion Factory has been entrusted by all of the major studios and broadcasters with the advertising and marketing of over $7 billion in filmed, live, broadcast, gaming, AR, VR and regulated gaming forms of entertainment, generating more than $100 Billion in revenue and 265 awards for creativity and technology for our clients. When I took a break from film school at UCLA to move to Hawaii, my mother did not lecture me. Instead, she took 150 of her favorite aphorisms and in her beautiful calligraphy, wrote them artistically throughout a blank journal. That is the origin of the Lessons from the Mountain series. Since then, on my journeys to the top of a mountain to watch the sunrise, I have spent countless hours contemplating words of wisdom from the sages of all races, genders and political persuasions, constantly accumulating the thoughts to guide me on my life path. I hope you enjoy my books. Please let me know your thoughts, as I highly value your feedback!
