If a drop of water falls in a lake, there is no identity. But if it falls on a leaf, it shines. So choose the best place where your ability shines.   Our destiny is not created by the shoes we wear, but by the steps we take.

If a drop of water falls in a lake, there is no identity. But if it falls on a leaf, it shines. So choose the best place where your ability shines.   Our destiny is not created by the shoes we wear, but by the steps we take.

Assuming control of one’s own destiny could not be more important in life.

Some believe in fate or destiny. Others believe it is entirely within their own control and that nothing other than their own efforts and determination will fill out the equation.

I belong to the latter camp.

It is a glorious feeling to buy into fate, as if there is a master plan in which all things are predetermined. As a writer, I adore the idea. Destiny has drama, flair and definitive appeal to a story. But as a sentient human being walking the planet with focus and determination, I find the concept limiting and opt to not leverage that mindset as it comes to my daily interactions and my long term plans.

In a world of over 7 billion people, making your mark as the most unique expression of your talents could not be more important. Trying to differentiate oneself from all of the others is a skill that requires an inner belief that this is, in fact, true.

So if we start with the supposition that we are the unique being that we presume ourselves to be, then the next step is working with every resource one has to find the proper expression of such, and to be circumspect and non egotistical in the process. These are qualities that do not always readily go hand in hand.

In order to to be the drop of water on the leaf, one must calculate one’s trajectory in order that one may ultimately find oneself upon said leaf, rather than being just another drop in the lake.

Metaphors not withstanding, the path to achieving this, I believe, starts with a deep personal exploration of discovering that which is capable of generating the most passion, most conviction, most desire to kick one’s heels out of bed each and every day and leveraging that particular interest into what you opt to use for your expression of your personal unique qualities.

Once you have identified that which is so moving to you, only then may you use that to your greater advantage in demonstrating how and why you are that shiny drop of water on the leaf that warrants attention.

Everyone has an intense desire to become. To grow. To evolve. Some express it more aptly than others, but as I speak with people, I believe that everyone has that story deep within that wishes more than anything else to grow and shine with that special quality that differentiates them from all others.

The life journey is short. Our opportunity to evolve in the most impactful of ways is entirely up to us to manifest… so choose your options wisely.

When I was 5 years old, I discovered that the lemon tree in the backyard + dixie cups + water and sugar and I was in business. I have been hooked on that ever since. In 1979, I borrowed $14,000 to create a brand new product... photographic greeting cards with no text on the inside, called Paradise Photography. That was the start of The Illusion Factory. Since then, The Illusion Factory has been entrusted by all of the major studios and broadcasters with the advertising and marketing of over $7 billion in filmed, live, broadcast, gaming, AR, VR and regulated gaming forms of entertainment, generating more than $100 Billion in revenue and 265 awards for creativity and technology for our clients. When I took a break from film school at UCLA to move to Hawaii, my mother did not lecture me. Instead, she took 150 of her favorite aphorisms and in her beautiful calligraphy, wrote them artistically throughout a blank journal. That is the origin of the Lessons from the Mountain series. Since then, on my journeys to the top of a mountain to watch the sunrise, I have spent countless hours contemplating words of wisdom from the sages of all races, genders and political persuasions, constantly accumulating the thoughts to guide me on my life path. I hope you enjoy my books. Please let me know your thoughts, as I highly value your feedback!
