Listen to the silence, it has so much to say.

Listen to the silence, it has so much to say.
RUMI
How does one get to silence?
You must start by expounding upon the obvious answer of going somewhere that is silent, as you are going to get there, and find that your mind is racing.
For me, the silence comes before sunrise. When I walk in a beautiful location that is tranquil and free of anything except natural stimuli, that is where I find that of which Rumi speaks. I feel at one with the universe, as there are always a planet or two above the horizon. In staring at them, I feel the connection to a much larger whole than my tiny existence on this speck of land within the galaxy we live.
More important, as I continue to walk and think, my mind will often times find the inner tranquility of the proverbial silence. If I leave it alone long enough for it to find its haven amongst the environment of which I am inhabiting, I discover that I am more likely to encounter the inner stillness that quiets my being and enables me to achieve this incredible state of oneness.
Surprisingly, in that state of oneness, it is more likely that I have found other creatures attracting to me. Deer, coyotes, rabbits, rattlesnakes, hawks, bats, birds, lizards and other creatures seem to make their appearances in this natural calmness that arises.
Silence is most powerful because the deepest of experiences will enable you to find your center, and once there, some of the most profound revelations will appear. If this sounds counterintuitive, such that you are aiming for silence so that revelations will arise, look at it this way. Perhaps there are countless trivial variables that inhabit your daily thoughts. Choices for meals, errands to run, rethinking that which others may have said, etc. Once you find your path to silence, let these thoughts run their course for about 10 minutes. See each one, smile at it and let it occupy the space it requires and then dismiss it and keep focusing on the variables that bring you to the silence. Eventually, the trivial thoughts will have run their course, and you are left only with the stimuli that brought you to tranquility. That is when the deeper awakening occurs.
In that awakening, you will unearth ideas, revelations, experiences and opportunities that can never fully emerge through the haze of the daily distraction layer. They will materialize in their own sweet time, and empower you to find the deeper thoughts that are life-transformative. They will give you direction to destinations previously unknown. They will stimulate your being to venture further, deeper and enable you to reach new heights of your overall existence.
Too ethereal for you? Perhaps it is. Or… perhaps you have never fully found your place to genuinely quiet your mind, such that your deeper inner being is finally free to communicate with you in an unencumbered state?
I adore Rumi. He was truly one of the great sages in life. This simple, but powerful aphorism speaks volumes… if you have the patience and determination to listen.
Happy Sunday!
