Eight years ago, like any entrepreneur, I was staring at my bedroom ceiling at 3 AM. The writing was on the wall and I knew it. There was no escape.

Normally I would wait until morning and take my 5 mile hike into the mountains. But this time I couldn’t sleep, and so I grabbed a flashlight and took off wandering up to the top of a mountain to sort my mind. I was terrified that day. 1 million thoughts racing through my mind. Some were terrifying. Some bolstered courage. Most were leaving me debilitated.

The background of today’s quote is the sunrise that greeted me that day.

I have climbed the mountain in the darkness more than 1000 times now and watched the sunrise… but never one as magical as this one. This is the one in which I connected with source.

Today’s quote is not particularly profound. It is just good advice. When you find yourself in the crossroads of a decision that you must make, retreating to a place of beauty that is yours and allowing all voices within you to communicate freely without judgment is one of life‘s most valuable resources. I think you will discover that you have the solution deep within and that if you allow your inner being to freely communicate with you, it will tell you what you really need to know and what you really need to do. It may not be an easy course of action, mine certainly wasn’t. But it will be the course of action that will deliver you from where you are, to where are you most wish to be.

I started drafting all of the thoughts that came to me while I climbed this mountain day after day after day, and put it into a journal called Lessons from the Mountain, so that when I had another moment of uncertainty, those lessons were waiting for me. There’s nothing esoteric about this. It is just prudent to allow the communication that comes from deep within yourself to have a real voice. One without judgment or scorn.

Only then, can you truly learn who you are, what you want and most importantly, what you are truly made of. When you emerge from a lesson of that magnitude you are not the same person you were when you started the lesson. You will feel that evolution.

We all go through numerous evolutions in life. I hope in sharing this I help you to pave the way to make your evolutions most useful to a brighter future.

When I was 5 years old, I discovered that the lemon tree in the backyard + dixie cups + water and sugar and I was in business. I have been hooked on that ever since. In 1979, I borrowed $14,000 to create a brand new product... photographic greeting cards with no text on the inside, called Paradise Photography. That was the start of The Illusion Factory. Since then, The Illusion Factory has been entrusted by all of the major studios and broadcasters with the advertising and marketing of over $7 billion in filmed, live, broadcast, gaming, AR, VR and regulated gaming forms of entertainment, generating more than $100 Billion in revenue and 265 awards for creativity and technology for our clients. When I took a break from film school at UCLA to move to Hawaii, my mother did not lecture me. Instead, she took 150 of her favorite aphorisms and in her beautiful calligraphy, wrote them artistically throughout a blank journal. That is the origin of the Lessons from the Mountain series. Since then, on my journeys to the top of a mountain to watch the sunrise, I have spent countless hours contemplating words of wisdom from the sages of all races, genders and political persuasions, constantly accumulating the thoughts to guide me on my life path. I hope you enjoy my books. Please let me know your thoughts, as I highly value your feedback!
