Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay… small acts of kindness and love.
Humanity is carried on the shoulders of irrepressible kindness. This manifests itself in so many unique and decidedly compassionate ways.
Trying to find our place within the larger structure of humanity is a lifelong task that is seldom truly ever accomplished…it is more likely managed on a regular basis, at best.
The horrific circumstances in Ukraine give us opportunity to view countless expressions of such kindness in every walk of life. So many innocent people are having their lives completely disrupted by the thugs in Putin’s regime. I watched a group of Polish citizens helping pull together a surprise birthday party for a seven-year-old girl who had to flee with her family from Ukraine. The joy in all these peoples faces is unmistakable for the kindness that Gandalf (Tolkien) speaks about.
In the photo below, Briton Alex Larenty lives on a wild game park in South Africa and discovered that if he puts cream on the paws of a lion to heal an infection, the lie]on would appear to slacken and smile. All the lions in the park are so conditioned now that they roll over on their backs in order that he may massage their paws with cream.
There are so many forms of unkindness that permeate our lives. Emotional, psychological and physical. Almost without exception, these are expressions of desperation that are screaming from a human being who did not receive the proper nurturing in the early years. They walk our planet with an unconscious desire to subordinate others to their lower level vibration because bringing down others is the only way they can begin to feel relatively normal by their standards, given their tremendous inequity.
There is no overall cure or method for solving these problems. They have been around since the dawn of time and I do not believe, human nature being what it is, that there is any method for bringing these human related and human caused atrocities into check. I think they are a factor in life that must be coped with regardless of how we might feel about them.
Given the likelihood of their perpetual existence, the only combatant of value is billions of people learning today’s aphorism. Finding the extra resolve within to be part of the solution, rather than to contribute to the overall problem.
The good news is that it does not require global organization, nor does it require governmental funding and structure. In fact, you can join in and be a part of the solution today. Right now. And it will cost you nothing. So what are you waiting for? There is some person in your life who could really use an act of kindness to help assuage something that they are going through in life. Even if you reach out and let them know you’re thinking about them or that you love them or that you understand what they are trying to cope with is one step closer if your intentions are truly heartfelt.
We only get a limited number of trips around the sun. Some of them are more memorable than others. But the softness that comes from another person who cares about what you are trying to get through can last a lifetime. It doesn’t require extensive effort, it only requires awareness. The ability to be sensitive to what another party might be feeling and to stay in tune with their needs in your own special way.
If Frodo and company are able to battle Saruman, then perhaps the rest of us can find the strength, capacity, compassion and free time to honestly express a few acts of selfless kindness in our day-to-day lives.
