The men and women of law enforcement who defended the US Capitol on January 6 are heroes. They are patriots and they are the very best of us. They did not just defend a building or the people sheltering in it, they put their lives on the line to defend who we are as a country and as a people. They defended the very institutions and principles that define the United States.

How far are you willing to go in order to protect the Federal democratic republic that we have upheld in this country for over 270 years?
George Washington, our very first president, stepped down after two terms in office, and he did so, with the expectation and the admonition that anyone who is not willing to step into public service, and then back out of public service willingly, does not warrant the position.
To that point, Washington stated, “The Constitution is the guide which I never will abandon. It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a Free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even of his personal services to the defense of it.”
We have been operating as a beacon of hope for the world at large, and, in that period of time we have certainly faced our share of crises, but the one thing that is without question is that we are all first, Americans, and in our country, the Constitution is the highest order of the land.
Without this sacred document, we would be a free-for-all, and the infrastructure and lifestyle to which we have all grown accustomed is very likely to completely crumble, and fall by the wayside, in favor of anarchy, followed by an authoritarian government that will start to dictate its will upon the “subjects” (not citizens) in the nation.
Many of our ancestors have fled from countries which were authoritarian, in order that they might find refuge in this land of opportunity. It is only through our dedication to upholding this Constitution, that we are able to live in such a free society.
As quickly as this paper shield is removed, we will find ourselves in a highly disturbing state of affairs, in which many of the existing businesses that are stable, will fall apart and will be taken over by an authoritarian regime that cares not for any of our civil liberties.
We are conditioned from a very early age to be polarized on one side or the other, whether this is a political party or a university affiliation, or a professional team sport affiliation, we are conditioned that it is “us vs. them.” Yet, while we are continually divided by party lines, we are missing a huge component of what makes us a truly free democracy.
The reality is that this polarity is a complete illusion. Human beings are a single specie, and every subdivision based on race, nationality, religion, sexual preference, or otherwise, is an artificial delineation that is leveraged, in many cases, to continue to foster the polarization between us so that there is a greater opportunity for our adversaries to divide and conquer us. This could not be more obvious than it is at this moment in history.
We, as a nation must look at ourselves with scrutiny, and decide whether or not we are truly one nation or whether we are so fragile in our perceived subdivisions of categories of people that we can no longer hold it together.
The choice is ours.
