When you come to the edge of all the light you have, and must take a step into the darkness of the unknown, believe that one of two things will happen. Either there will be something solid for you to stand on – or you will be taught how to fly.

PATRICK OVERTON
What keeps you focused on the prospect of something that is the ultimate long shot?
If you have that knowledge internally that says this is what I MUST DO, would anything less suffice?
Some people feel a calling. A determined passion to thrive against all evidence to the contrary. It is a deep-seated belief that you are destined to accomplish something and nothing less will suffice.
If that is stirring within, it is all-consuming. It sends you to the extremes of your life and makes everyone else around you look at you with a queer expression, clearly wondering if you really know what you are doing.
It is vibrant in your dreams when you sleep. It is top of mind when you awaken. It is your focus throughout the day. It is your mistress and your master all in one.
As I was growing up, I came across Patrick Overton’s famous quote. It resonated so loudly within me, I feel it has come to define my entire life.
We are luminous beings, operating here on planet Earth, exercising our opportunity to be a creative soul, pursuing the greatest of our talents and working to continually improve ourselves in every way that we can. How then, can we ever let go of that which we feel we are destined to achieve?
The temptations to do otherwise come in huge swaths of opportunity, each with their respective benefits, but only one of those myriad options is THE ONE that will scratch that proverbial itch. Only one will deliver that innate satisfaction of accomplishment that is the driving force behind every ounce of your being.
This can drive us to points of personal exhaustion, financial disaster, emotional disappointment, and deprivation on scales that others will never understand. It is demoralizing and can give you every last reason to question who you are and what you are truly living for.
But the truth is, that once you get a taste of accomplishing your first personal goal of this magnitude, you are hooked on the most addictive of feelings. Once you know that you have what it takes, nothing short of doing something even grander will suffice. It is an obsession. It drives all of your choices. It forces your options to narrow. And eventually, you do come to the edge of all of the light you have…
And the most magical thing in the world happens at that moment… you are truly taught how to fly.
Happy Wednesday!
