When It’s All Or Nothing, Will You Have The Courage?

Have the courage

There’s something about genius having the courage to fly in the face of insurmountable odds that is intensely alluring to me. In watching the producer and production designer’s account of Prince performing at the Super Bowl, that is especially appealing. The chance to perform Purple Rain in a downpour, during halftime of the Super Bowl is akin to God providing the special effects.

But having the courage to do it on a slippery surface stage with dancers performing in high heels, in front of more than 100 million people, took raw courage… and Prince’s response to the advance news of rain so exemplifies the fearless genius that he was.

When your world is spinning faster than you might expect, and you know that braking and slowing down will only cause more damage, sometimes the only real option in life is having the courage to accelerate full speed, without fear, into the unknown. The rush of doing so is both intense and addicting, but it nowhere near as addicting as pulling it off. That’s the central element that makes going for it so intensely alluring.

Olympian athletes, performers in all sports and entertainment, entrepreneurs, inventors, scientists, and countless other professions find themselves in that moment of having the courage or nothing. I think a certain part of our soul matures considerably faster at that moment. And it teaches us what we are truly made of.

So the next time the world throws you storm clouds, go out and do your very best performance in the rain.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: When did you find yourself at a moment where having the courage was required because it was all or nothing, and you went for it?

When I was 5 years old, I discovered that the lemon tree in the backyard + dixie cups + water and sugar and I was in business. I have been hooked on that ever since. In 1979, I borrowed $14,000 to create a brand new product... photographic greeting cards with no text on the inside, called Paradise Photography. That was the start of The Illusion Factory. Since then, The Illusion Factory has been entrusted by all of the major studios and broadcasters with the advertising and marketing of over $7 billion in filmed, live, broadcast, gaming, AR, VR and regulated gaming forms of entertainment, generating more than $100 Billion in revenue and 265 awards for creativity and technology for our clients. When I took a break from film school at UCLA to move to Hawaii, my mother did not lecture me. Instead, she took 150 of her favorite aphorisms and in her beautiful calligraphy, wrote them artistically throughout a blank journal. That is the origin of the Lessons from the Mountain series. Since then, on my journeys to the top of a mountain to watch the sunrise, I have spent countless hours contemplating words of wisdom from the sages of all races, genders and political persuasions, constantly accumulating the thoughts to guide me on my life path. I hope you enjoy my books. Please let me know your thoughts, as I highly value your feedback!
