Notice the people who make an effort to stay in your life.

A person who goes the extra mile to demonstrate your value to them, in a kind and meaningful way, is a relationship worthy of investing all that you have to offer.

There are all sorts of transactional relationships in business. Casual friends who do business together because the timing and circumstances are right. Others who will only be in business with you for a price they can live with, even though in the quiet recess of their mind, they feel they are overpaying… no matter what they pay.) And others who attract to you because of the values, methodologies, creativity, courage and determination that makes you whom you are.

When you are fortunate to find those kinds of relationships in both your personal and professional world, recognize the rarity of the other party with whom you are engaging, and act in such a way that they would describe you in the same way you are describing them. Let them know you’ve got their back.

Hollywood is ripe with stories of all those who love to be your friend when the champagne is flowing, and who always seem to be busy when it is not. Over time, growing up around all of those values, was such a valuable impression to have had imprinted on me. When you stop and take inventory at a later stage of life, you can see how those influences, negative as they were, genuinely helped to shape you into who you are continually becoming.

Stay genuine and real at all costs.

You can never get it back again if you don’t.

Happy Thursday!

When I was 5 years old, I discovered that the lemon tree in the backyard + dixie cups + water and sugar and I was in business. I have been hooked on that ever since. In 1979, I borrowed $14,000 to create a brand new product... photographic greeting cards with no text on the inside, called Paradise Photography. That was the start of The Illusion Factory. Since then, The Illusion Factory has been entrusted by all of the major studios and broadcasters with the advertising and marketing of over $7 billion in filmed, live, broadcast, gaming, AR, VR and regulated gaming forms of entertainment, generating more than $100 Billion in revenue and 265 awards for creativity and technology for our clients. When I took a break from film school at UCLA to move to Hawaii, my mother did not lecture me. Instead, she took 150 of her favorite aphorisms and in her beautiful calligraphy, wrote them artistically throughout a blank journal. That is the origin of the Lessons from the Mountain series. Since then, on my journeys to the top of a mountain to watch the sunrise, I have spent countless hours contemplating words of wisdom from the sages of all races, genders and political persuasions, constantly accumulating the thoughts to guide me on my life path. I hope you enjoy my books. Please let me know your thoughts, as I highly value your feedback!
