One of the greatest moments in life is feeling confident that you can get what you want and you are motivated to do what it takes.

One of the greatest moments in life is feeling confident that you can get what you want and you are motivated to do what it takes.

Do you remember the decisive moment when you determined what you were going to do… and set out on the first step towards achieving it?

It may have come from a culmination of assorted thoughts that gave way to explorations and finally lead to that aha lightbulb moment. For others, it was a single thought, a crystallization perhaps, of something that had been germinating deep inside, that connected and ignited the energy behind making it come to fruition. And for others, it came in a flash, and they acted instantly.

Regardless of the spark and inception, it is the core depth of confidence and determination that illuminate deep within, which form the foundation upon which every other aspect of the journey is built upon.

This gave me pause to contemplate why one particular concept over all else garners such a profound response. Having made a living using imagination for decades, the impetus of a great concept comes from anywhere, at any time. When it arrives, it must be written or recorded instantly, because as quickly as it arrives, it is equally likely to fade, as other ideas continue to show up on the proverbial doorstep. Or as Prince said, in 1999, “I was dreamin’ when I wrote this…Forgive me if it goes astray.”

If you are working in a similar fashion, you are very aware that eventually this process must lead to a Sophie’s Choice moment. It is a moment where you must make a very hard choice (sometimes) between your children, or in this case, your ideas/brainstorms. Obviously, Sophie (played by the Academy Award-Winning, Meryl Streep), must make the horrific choice between which one of her two children are to survive the Nazis. It is horrific to contemplate and devastating to watch in a film. As a creator, you are in a much less dramatic circumstance in having to choose between your myriad wonderful ideas. And honestly, there are times when you are truly torn to the depths within, that you must only go with one of the two ideas… it is a very difficult choice.

With that determination in the rear view mirror, you are finally set to take off into the real world with all of your hopes and aspirations, knowing that you are on course with your own destiny. The initial motivation that comes from this inciting incident and everything thereafter is a direct descendent of your focused choices made.

Happy Thursday!

When I was 5 years old, I discovered that the lemon tree in the backyard + dixie cups + water and sugar and I was in business. I have been hooked on that ever since. In 1979, I borrowed $14,000 to create a brand new product... photographic greeting cards with no text on the inside, called Paradise Photography. That was the start of The Illusion Factory. Since then, The Illusion Factory has been entrusted by all of the major studios and broadcasters with the advertising and marketing of over $7 billion in filmed, live, broadcast, gaming, AR, VR and regulated gaming forms of entertainment, generating more than $100 Billion in revenue and 265 awards for creativity and technology for our clients. When I took a break from film school at UCLA to move to Hawaii, my mother did not lecture me. Instead, she took 150 of her favorite aphorisms and in her beautiful calligraphy, wrote them artistically throughout a blank journal. That is the origin of the Lessons from the Mountain series. Since then, on my journeys to the top of a mountain to watch the sunrise, I have spent countless hours contemplating words of wisdom from the sages of all races, genders and political persuasions, constantly accumulating the thoughts to guide me on my life path. I hope you enjoy my books. Please let me know your thoughts, as I highly value your feedback!
