Use your smile to change the world. Don’t let the world change your smile.

A smile could well be the single line of defense against everything in life. In fact, it may well be your most powerful tool in your bag of tricks….
Going back more than a million and a half years…. Human beings were tiny frail creatures, trying to stay alive without tools of magnitude, use of fire or… get this… an internet, computer or mobile device!!!!
If you could begin to imagine this, they would have to take pigments or blood and crude sticks/leaves just to draw a rudimentary illustration of an animal or such on a cave wall… doing it all with available light… and get this…. No one was able to leave a LIKE?!
But the most powerful weapon of the day was a smile. With a smile you could defeat a potential enemy by making them your friend. It was the first true conveyance of understanding in terms of relationships. The smile is not unique to humans, you see it throughout the animal kingdom. This, and other signals (such as wagging tails), enable animals to assess friendly relationships and to make snap judgments about the creature with whom they are in contact.
We are given a smile to enable us to communicate nonverbally with a delicate ability to convey the full spectrum of emotions. Without dissecting all the forms of a smile such as shy, flirtatious, friendly, etc. and the disingenuous smiles that camouflage the deception hidden within, the smile remains the front door to how people meet us, rate us, understand us and determine how their relationship with us should be constructed, all on a subconscious basis.
One of my most favorite adages is… no one needs a smile who has none left to give. It was the love for that phrase that drew me to this one…. Because, beyond the disenfranchised, the broken and weak, there are many others who require your smile in order for you to advance, gain ground, build bonds, and so much more.
A smile is the ambassador. It is the first chess move. It is the start of the seduction. The beginning of a friendship. The door opener. The conveyance of friendship, compassion, understanding, acceptance and appreciation. It truly is a remarkable tool, skill, asset.
All that said, the world is more than willing to try to find countless ways to make that smile disappear. Watch the news any night for an hour and count how many times you smile vs. shouting epithets out loud. We continually try to maintain our smile through thick and thin, perhaps too stingy at times but somewhere we try to maintain a reserve, so that at that appropriate moment, we have one readily on hand for our best use.
When things are going south quickly, and the world seems to be overwhelming, see if you can find a moment to smile. About anything that makes you happy. Watch a video on cute baby animals or similar. Find anything that really makes you smile and sit with it for a few minutes. Watch how that smile rejuvenates your soul in countless ways.
Only then will you truly connect with something so primal, so powerful, so readily accessible in our arsenal of choices. Perhaps at that moment you will become that much more empowered as a result of your choice and leverage that smile to create another mood alteration going forward until you are more readily capable of rectifying that which has made your world as overwhelming as it appears to have become.
A smile is not a cure all. But it comes damn close sometimes.
Happy Saturday!
