words and ideas

Words and ideas have immense power. When I first was attracted to the world of aphorisms written by so many brilliant minds, I was a teenager trying to sort my way through a world that was confusing, scary, intimidating, inviting, opportune, and ripe for the taking.

In my choice to abandon Judaism, I had no spiritual support for the moments when life was overwhelming, disappointing, scary and it left me searching for new words and ideas.

I think my mom sensed this in me and created a book of some of these stimulating words and ideas which she wrote for me in her beautiful calligraphy in a blank journal…I regularly retreated into that book at moments of fear, despair, sadness and would look for a kernel of thought that would give me comfort based on whatever was troubling me at the moment.

As I got older and realized the power of these little tiny thoughts, I turned to them with more frequency and continued to collect them as they made themselves known to me in a host of ways.

Decades later, I have adopted the philosophy that by sharing these words and ideas with my friends and on social media, I can effectuate the opportunity to change the world one thought at a time. Given the reach that Pinterest has afforded me, these little messages are now seen by close to 1 million people per month now.

I found this quotation by Robin Williams this morning and I lit up like a sunflower staring straight into the morning sun. First, I think Robin is one of the greatest geniuses that ever walked the planet, and second, this particular thought is really the cornerstone to the reason why I spend so much time doing this.

The world can change, the world does change, and only those who are willing to make the attempt are the ones who are actually able to make it happen. If any one of the kernels of thought that I share from so many bright minds are able to impact an individual’s life, then the work is worthwhile.

I hope your Thursday brings you great joy and unexpected wonderful surprises!

When I was 5 years old, I discovered that the lemon tree in the backyard + dixie cups + water and sugar and I was in business. I have been hooked on that ever since. In 1979, I borrowed $14,000 to create a brand new product... photographic greeting cards with no text on the inside, called Paradise Photography. That was the start of The Illusion Factory. Since then, The Illusion Factory has been entrusted by all of the major studios and broadcasters with the advertising and marketing of over $7 billion in filmed, live, broadcast, gaming, AR, VR and regulated gaming forms of entertainment, generating more than $100 Billion in revenue and 265 awards for creativity and technology for our clients. When I took a break from film school at UCLA to move to Hawaii, my mother did not lecture me. Instead, she took 150 of her favorite aphorisms and in her beautiful calligraphy, wrote them artistically throughout a blank journal. That is the origin of the Lessons from the Mountain series. Since then, on my journeys to the top of a mountain to watch the sunrise, I have spent countless hours contemplating words of wisdom from the sages of all races, genders and political persuasions, constantly accumulating the thoughts to guide me on my life path. I hope you enjoy my books. Please let me know your thoughts, as I highly value your feedback!
